Cloth types: napped vs worsted
- Napped cloth — has a soft fuzzy surface, so the ball travels slower. Traditional for Russian billiards and amateur pool. Affordable.
- Worsted (speed) cloth — smooth and tightly woven (e.g. Simonis type); the ball is fast and accurate and it collects less chalk dust. The standard for professional pool and snooker.

Weight and density
Cloth quality is often rated by weight (g/m²), typically 700–950 g/m²: heavier, denser cloth is more durable and gives an even surface. Wool-nylon blends are cheaper; pure wool / worsted is more premium.
